Local information about Redondo Beach

Located in the South Bay area of the greater Los Angeles area, Redondo Beach is one third of the beach cities in Los Angeles county. Originally occupied by the Chowinga Indians, the area was part of the 75,000-acre Rancho San Pedro Spanish land grant awarded to Juan Dominguez in 1789. Later, 43,000 acres of the Dominguez Rancho became the ten-mile oceanfront stretch of land called Rancho Sausal Redondo. During the 1880s Juan's descendents sold part of the land tract, and the North Pacific Railroad line extended its rail line from Los Angeles into the Redondo Beach area to facilitate transportation of goods arriving by ship in the underground shipping port. Combined with other enterprises, this expansion helped further stimulate the local economy, and the circular-street city continued to evolve. Contemporary times find much of leisure life in Redondo Beach centers along sandy dunes and ocean waves. Visitors who take advantage of Redondo vacation rentals enjoy a rich, historical get-away blended with extraordinary entertainment.

The city council designed the Goodyear Blimp as the Official City Bird in 1983.
